Idyllic expanses of sand, clear blue water and lush tropical rain-forest – Andaman and Nicobar Islands has everything that would appeal to any nature lover.
For the longest time, Indian tourists seeking a beach haven have flown to more famous seaside destinations like Thailand, Maldives, Mauritius and Bali – often overlooking the spectacle that was very much a part of Incredible India – Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an archipelago about 1,000 kms off the eastern coast of India in the Bay of Bengal. Comprising 572 islands, only 38 are permanently inhabited and about 12-15 accessible by tourists.
Port Blair, being the capital and having the lone airport in the region, tends to be the gateway to these pristine islands. Port Blair houses Cellular Jail, a colonial prison housing political exiles, which has now been converted into a national memorial. The most popular tourist destination however, is Havelock Island. Scenic landscapes and breath-taking sunsets are best experienced at this island, which is a short ferry ride away from Port Blair. Rated as one of the best beaches in Asia by Time Magazine, Radhanagar Beach is a white sand and sparkling blue water beach, fringed by lush forests along the shore. A few kilometers down the road from Radhanagar Beach is Kala Pathar Beach – a charming and more secluded beach for those who enjoy peace and tranquility. Elephant beach is home to thriving coral reefs and is the ideal destination to indulge in some water sports like snorkeling and sea walking. Havelock also has some of the best sites for SCUBA diving.
Best Time to Visit:
Andaman Islands are blessed with pleasant weather throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 22 degree Celsius to 35 degree Celsius. Peak season starts from October to March. Lesser number of tourists visit the island from May to September due to higher temperatures in summer and the following monsoon season. Some water sports are not operational during the rains, but it is a great time to enjoy Andaman’s beauty at lower hotel tariffs.
How to Get There:
The only airport of Andaman region is located in the capital city of Port Blair. There are daily direct flights from major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, Delhi and also connecting flights from other cities as well. Ferry services can be availed for travel between the islands. Auto rickshaws, taxis, buses and motorbikes are available for transport within the island.
